Question:
What a day we have just had! My 7 yo has suffered ear infections since she was a couple of months old. Last year she finally had her adenoids removed and all has been so much better. Until a couple of weeks ago.
I took her to the dentist (who is a friend) who was horrified at her teeth! I haven't taken her for a couple of years but I have been so careful with her teeth! We were on a farm so she has always had flouride tablets, she has never fallen asleep on the breast or bottle, never really had anything to drink other than water and a glass of milk each day. I helped her to clean her teeth till she was 5. Etc, etc. The only thing I did get slack about was the dental visits.
So, to hear that her 4 adult molars would need serious reconstruction (if they could save them) broke my heart! I left feeling like the worst mother
So, we went to see the specialist on Saturday and he said he sees a lot of this in children who don't receive flouride. I explained the above and he said that the other cause can be a lot of trauma, particluarly in the first year, from things such as frequent ear infections. So, I now feel a bit better that it isn't completely my fault, but can't believe she has a head full of weak teeth as a result! Apparently the body would have taken the flouride to help fight the infection.
But, no point moping! We've just spent the day in Brisbane having her 4 adult molars capped, her four baby molars covered in a protective coat, and her front tooth removed (the new one was coming down over it). She still has a stained tooth at the front and the others may be stained too - it is permanent, but at least they can do something cosmetic later.
So, I went through that horribly heart breaking time of watching my baby go under anaesthetic (again) and having her wake up kicking and screaming. She finally fell asleep tonight crying - poor thing.
I know that this is not a huge thing, but to see your child suffer is so heart rending. And to know that it is not over yet does not help either. I'm also so infuriated that through all of those ear infections, no one thought to mention to me that there might be a problem with her teeth as a result!
This might be more of a vent LOL
Oh, you poor thing.both of you! I am so sorry that it happened.sounds like it was a bunch of factors.none of which is you being a bad mother!
Hope she is feeling better
Sounds like you need a too Kerrie
Poor wee girl, hope she is feeling better today, so when do they get there adult molars?
My three kids also grow up with no Fluoride, other than the amount that is in the tooth paste, I never once gave them Fluoride tablets, and they all grew up with perfect teeth not one of them has had a cavity yet and they are 30, 27 and 18 years, so don't blame your self for not giving the tablets, If your wee girl suffered ear infections more than likely she spent a lot of her time on antibiotics that would have caused some damage and not much you could of done about that
when I was born I was really sick was not supposed to of lived, I was on iron medication till I was seven years old from birth, my four front teeth were badly stained not the baby teeth but second teeth, I had them covered.
As my Obstetrician said when the TT was born.Welcome to 95% guilt.and it is so true.
You have tried so hard to give her the best.when something like this happens it is a slap in the face.
It is a word of warning to new parents regarding the future consequences of Antibiotics.I know I tried very hard to limit their usage when my son was younger (but then I didn't have a child with constant ear infections).more so as not to build up a tolerance.
for you and a very special for your little one.
Oh Kerrie to you your little one you have done nothing wrong, your a great Mum
Someone else said to me that it might have been the antibiotics too. Apparently she would have been predisposed to weaker teeth and then this has added to the problem. She is much better today - home from school but still sore and tired. And she talks funny! She's loving it and is back to her old self in many ways. Thanks so much for the thoughts girls - really appreciate it
Oh the healing power of youth.wonderful isn't it.
My son had a hernia operation last year at the age of 4. He was full of energy as soon as he woke up and was climbing fences the next day! I was horrified but the doctor said the more he does the quicker he'll heal. Made hubby stop his moaning though
Awww you poor thing, dont feel guilty, they shold have told you about the ear infections, I never knew that and Gav gets them quite often.
Glad to hear your daughter is doing well though
